The Academy of Sciences, the country’s highest scientific institution, was established in St. Petersburg by the decrees of Peter I (1724) and opened after his death on November 12, 1725.
The first academicians were exclusively foreigners, and among them were such important European scientists as the mathematicians Bernoulli and Euler. You can see the portrait of Leonhard Euler against the background of the building of the Academy of Sciences in Leningrad on the stamp of the artist A. Zavyalov, issued in 1957 for the 250th anniversary of the birth of the great mathematician.
The first Russian academician was the greatest scientist, writer and poet, the son of a peasant in the Arkhangelsk province - M. V. Lomonosov (1711-1765). A number of Soviet stamps are dedicated to him. When the 200th anniversary of the Academy was canceled in 1925, two stamps of figure by the artist N. Alekseev with a portrait of M. V. Lomonosov against the backdrop of the building of the Academy of Sciences in Leningrad were issued to commemorate this event. One of them is shown in the photo.
To commemorate the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Academy in 1945, a series of two stamps was issued based on the drawings of the artist V. Klimashin. On one of them there is a portrait of M.V. Lomonosov against the background of the building of the Academy of Sciences in Leningrad, and on the other - the building of the Academy of Sciences in Moscow.
