In October 1970, the editorial board of the magazine «Kvant» suffered a bereavement. One of the initiators of the creation of our journal and its most active employees, Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Georgy Ivanovich Kosourov, has died.
He was born in Moscow on January 5, 1921. In 1939 he graduated from high school and entered the physics department of Moscow State University. During the Great Patriotic War, he worked as a mechanic in the workshops of the Research Institute of Physics of Moscow State University, and completed various defense tasks. After graduating from the university, G.I. Kosourov was a researcher at the Institute of Physical Problems of the USSR Academy of Sciences for a long time. Then he worked for some time at the Marine Hydrophysical Institute and sailed on the expedition ship “Mikhail Lomonosov” in the North Atlantic. After a year of his life, he was a senior researcher at the Institute of Crystallography of the USSR Academy of Sciences.
Trained as an optician, G.I. Kosourov worked in various fields of physics. He worked on the separation of materials in gas mixtures, solid state physics, optics of metals, low temperature physics and voting. A deeply original man, with a keen sense of experiment and an excellent understanding of theory, he made his contribution to each of these areas of physics.
Simultaneously with his scientific work, G.I. Kosourov was active in teaching at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and the Physics and Mathematics Boarding School at Moscow State University. He taught young people perseverance and authenticity in the knowledge of scientific truths, cultivated independence of thinking and the ability to bring things to their logical conclusion - all that he himself knew how to do amazingly well.
His intense love for physics and love for children naturally led him to the idea of the need to create our journal, in which he worked fruitfully from the very first steps «Kvant», for which he wrote several fascinating articles.
The entire life of Georgy Ivanovich Kosourov was a shining example of service to science. His memory will long remain in the hearts of his many friends and students.
