Dear readers!

Happy New Year! For the magazine «Kvant» this is the twentieth year of its existence. Many of those who, as schoolchildren, regularly read our magazine and reflected on its articles and tasks are now scientists, teachers, and engineers. We hope that our new subscribers will find a lot of interesting and useful things in the magazine.

Each issue of the magazine contains a wide range of materials. These are stories about the achievements of science and its applications, about the history of physics and mathematics and new discoveries. We introduce readers to major reporting and foreign scientists, their views and paths to science.

The magazine is filled with a variety of tasks that are necessary to train a drinking mind. These are challenging problems for beginners (“younger schoolchildren”), more serious selected school problems, exam problems for applicants that require even longer understanding of the Olympic data and research problems, cycles of problems for a mathematical circle. A special role is given to the “Problem Book «Kvant»” section, which holds traditional daily competitions for the best solution to a problem from this section. It must be said that most of the materials in our magazine are designed for server reading “with a pencil in hand.”

The magazine will find food for thought not only for “theorists”, but also for “experimenters” - those who love physical experiments.

Materials regularly appear in the magazine, telling about various olympids and competitions, about correspondence and evening physics and mathematics schools, about new books on mathematics and physics.

This year the volume of our magazine has increased by 16 pages. We would like to use this opportunity to better satisfy the wishes of our readers. Thus, those interested in computers and programmers will be addressed to articles on mathematical issues of programming, on the use of computers in science and in life. Much attention will be paid to various areas and achievements in space exploration. In particular, we will provide regular information about the work of the Weighty Youth Aerospace Society, recently created under the Komsomol Central Committee. On the pages of «Kvant» there will also be a place for works of fiction, primarily science fiction.

We would really like «Kvant» to become your friend, assistant, teacher, owner. And this is impossible without your direct participation, without test “feedback”. We are waiting for your letters!
