Stamps and match labels dedicated to Russian mathematicians
In 1946, on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the birth of the great Russian mathematician and mechanic Pafnutya Lvovich Chebyshev, figure artist E. Bulanova issued a series of postage stamps consisting of two miniatures. We present one of them at figure.
Above the portrait of the scientist is the inscription “Great Russian Mathematician,” which, however, does not fully reflect the role of P. L. Chebyshev in the development of Russian science. In addition to his brilliant mathematical achievements, P. L. Chebyshev left behind a number of outstanding research and inventions in mechanics, primarily related to the theory and practice of hinged-lever mechanisms that convert circular motion into rectilinear motion.
P. L. Chebyshev was the founder and inspirer of the St. Petersburg mathematical scale. Its outstanding representatives were academicians A. M. Lyapunov, A. A. Markov, V. A. Steklov. In 1967, a series of matchstick labels appeared with portraits of significant Russian physicists and mathematicians, among whom we see the St. Petersburg Mathematical Scale and his most prominent students. A. M. Lyapunov was not only a brilliant mathematician, but also a great mechanic. In 1967, for the 100th anniversary of his birth, also by figure E. Bulanova, a stamp was issued with a portrait of the scientist. Below it is a formula that gives the surface equation of the equilibrium figure of a rotating fluid. By the way, A. M. Lyapunov’s research on the equilibrium figures of a rotating fluid, the particles of which are engraved according to the law of universal gravitation, was undertaken on the initiative of his teacher P. L. Chebysheva.

TO OUR READERS
Subscriptions continue for the second half of 1971 to the popular scientific journal of physics and mathematics «Kvant».
The magazine is designed primarily for students in grades 7–10. It is also useful for teachers, especially those who teach clubs or elective classes in physics or mathematics, as well as all lovers of mathematics and physics.
The main content of the magazine is a “physics and mathematics school,” that is, materials that help to better understand physics and mathematics, learn to apply these sciences to teach various phenomena and processes that we encounter in practice, and learn to solve problems.
The reader will find many tasks in the magazine. Among them are problems offered at entrance exams for various disciplines, problems offered at olympiads, and simply interesting problems.
Notes describing physical instruments and experiments will help the reader set up and test a physical experiment.
The magazine publishes on its pages articles of a review nature, telling about the achievements of science and problems that are still waiting to be solved, stories about scientists and stories from scientists themselves about how “science is done”, how scientific discoveries appear.
The magazine constantly publishes results on books - already published and those still being prepared for publication.
Room price 30 kopecks. When subscribing, refer to our index 70465.
