The first school Olympiad in mathematics was held in Leningrad in the spring of 1934.
On the initiative of the Moscow Mathematical Society, the First Moscow Mathematical Olympiad for schoolchildren was held in 1935. Moscow mathematicians treated it with great enthusiasm. The organizing committee included all the leading Moscow mathematicians (academicians A. N. Kolmogorov, P. S. Aleksandrov, S. L. Sobolev; corresponding members L. A. Lyusternik, L. G. Shnirelman; professor V. F. Kagan; S. A. Yanovskaya, etc.).
From that time on, the Olympiads were held daily. They gained great popularity. Following the mathematicians, physicists, chemists, astronomers, geographers, biologists, and then linguists began to hold their Olympiads.
In 1960, the organizing committee of the XXIII Moscow Mathematical Olympiad, together with the Ministry of Education of the RSFSR, held the Mathematical Olympiad on a larger scale. Teams from the 13th region of the RSFSR and 9 allied resource teams took part in it.
This experiment turned out to be successful in the spring and since 1961 the All-Russian Mathematical Olympiads have already begun to be held regularly. They are held in four rounds: school, district, regional and final.
Since 1967, All-Russian Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry Olympiads have been held. Teams from all regions, territories, as well as autonomous and allied resource areas that do not have regional divisions took part in them. To hold the Olympiads, a Central Organizing Committee was organized under the Ministry of Education of the USSR, the chairman of which is Academician I. K. Kion.
Four winners from 8-10 classes from each region, territory, autonomous and allied resource are invited to the final round, in which several tasks of varying difficulty are offered for each class.
The winners of the Olympiad are awarded special prizes and certificates of honor.
By decision of the Central Organizing Committee, starting from the IV All-Russian Olympiad (1963), special signs are issued that are worn by all participants in the Olympiad.
