JOHANN KEPLER
AND QUIETLY BRAHE

Johannes Kepler (1571-1630), whose 400th birthday is celebrated this year, was an outstanding astronomer and a great mathematician.

He discovered three laws of planetary motion that planetary astronomy will forever delve into.

Kepler was a supporter of the Copernican theory and shushed him during university discussions. He wrote: “I love Copernicus not only for his supreme talents, but also for his mind, firm and calm.”

The photo shows stamps from the Yemeni Arab Republic, one of which shows a portrait of Johannes Kepler next to a portrait of Nicolaus Copernicus, and the second, taken from a series dedicated to the discoverers of space, contains a portrait of Kepler and a Soviet pennant taken to the Moon. You can also see Kepler’s portrait on a stamp of the German Democratic Resurplica, issued in 1971.

The photo shows two more stamps (Denmark and Yemeni Arab Resurplica) with a portrait of the famous 16th-century astronomer Tycho Brahe, for whom Johannes Kepler worked as an assistant for several years.

Tycho Brahe was a brilliant observer and a brilliant inventor of precision astronomical instruments. He built Europe’s first large observatory and compiled amazingly accurate tables of planetary movements.
