When solving many mathematical problems, the so-called Bunyakovsky-Cauchy inequality is used

∑i=1naibi≤∑i=1nai2⋅∑i=1nbi2(ai>0,bi>0).\sum_{i=1}^{n} a_i b_i \leq \sqrt{\sum_{i=1}^{n} a_i^2} \cdot \sqrt{\sum_{i=1}^{n} b_i^2} \quad (a_i > 0, b_i > 0).

Let us first give a small but very simple proof of this inequality. Let ∑i=1nai2=A,∑i=1nbi2=B.\sqrt{\sum_{i=1}^{n} a_i^2} = A, \quad \sqrt{\sum_{i=1}^{n} b_i^2} = B. Then we need to prove that

∑i=1naibiAB≤1.\frac{\sum_{i=1}^{n} a_i b_i}{AB} \leq 1.

Using the inequality xy≤12(x2+y2)xy \leq \frac{1}{2}(x^2+y^2), we write the following integer:

∑i=1naibiAB=∑i=1n(aiA⋅biB)≤\frac{\sum_{i=1}^{n} a_i b_i}{AB} = \sum_{i=1}^{n} \left(\frac{a_i}{A} \cdot \frac{b_i}{B}\right) \leq

≤∑i=1n12[(aiA)2+(biB)2]=12(1A2∑i=1nai2+1B2∑i=1nbi2)=1.\leq \sum_{i=1}^{n} \frac{1}{2} \left[ \left(\frac{a_i}{A}\right)^2 + \left(\frac{b_i}{B}\right)^2 \right] = \frac{1}{2} \left( \frac{1}{A^2} \sum_{i=1}^{n} a_i^2 + \frac{1}{B^2} \sum_{i=1}^{n} b_i^2 \right) = 1.

This implies inequality (*). As is known, equality in it is achieved when

a1A=b1B,a2A=b2B,…,anA=bnB,\frac{a_1}{A} = \frac{b_1}{B}, \quad \frac{a_2}{A} = \frac{b_2}{B}, \dots, \quad \frac{a_n}{A} = \frac{b_n}{B},

that is, when

a1b1=a2b2=⋯=anbn.\frac{a_1}{b_1} = \frac{a_2}{b_2} = \dots = \frac{a_n}{b_n}.

Let us now show how inequality (*) is applied.

  1. Find the most value of a function
    y=asin⁡x+bcos⁡xy = a \sin x + b \cos x
    (a>0,b>0,0<x<π2).\left(a > 0, b > 0, 0 < x < \frac{\pi}{2}\right).

Solution. Due to inequality (*) we have
y=asin⁡x+bcos⁡x⩽a2+b2⋅sin⁡2x+cos⁡2x=a2+b2.y = a \sin x + b \cos x \leqslant \sqrt{a^2 + b^2} \cdot \sqrt{\sin^2 x + \cos^2 x} = \sqrt{a^2 + b^2}.
The maximum is achieved under the condition
ab=sin⁡xcos⁡x,\frac{a}{b} = \frac{\sin x}{\cos x}, that is, when
tgx=ab.tg x = \frac{a}{b}.

  1. A variable type transformer must be designed so that its cross-shaped iron core fills as much of the internal cavity of the round winding as possible. What should be the cross-sectional dimensions of the core shown at figure if the radius of the coil is RR?
    Solution. Let ⇒AOB=α\Rightarrow AOB = \alpha, then
    14S=y2−(y−x)2=2xy−x2=R2(2sin⁡αcos⁡α−sin⁡2α).\frac{1}{4} S = y^2 - (y - x)^2 = 2xy - x^2 = R^2 \left(2 \sin \alpha \cos \alpha - \sin^2 \alpha\right).
    Hence S=2R2(2sin⁡2α+cos⁡2α−1)S = 2R^2 \left(2 \sin 2\alpha + \cos 2\alpha - 1\right). Let’s use inequality (*):
    S⩽2R2(22+12⋅sin⁡22α+cos⁡22α−1)=2R2(5−1).S \leqslant 2R^2 \left(\sqrt{2^2 + 1^2} \cdot \sqrt{\sin^2 2\alpha + \cos^2 2\alpha} - 1\right) = 2R^2 \left(\sqrt{5} - 1\right).
    Therefore, Smax⁡=2R2(5−1)S_{\max} = 2R^2 \left(\sqrt{5} - 1\right) is achieved at
    sin⁡2αcos⁡2α=21,\frac{\sin 2\alpha}{\cos 2\alpha} = \frac{2}{1}, from where α=12\alpha = \frac{1}{2} arctg 2.

  2. Consider three pairs of real numbers (a1,b1),(a2,b2),(a3,b3)(a_1, b_1), (a_2, b_2), (a_3, b_3). Prove that there is a triangle with side a=(a2−a3)2+(b2−b3)2,b=(a3−a1)2+(b3−b1)2,c=(a1−a2)2+(b1−b2)2a = \sqrt{(a_2 - a_3)^2 + (b_2 - b_3)^2}, \quad b = \sqrt{(a_3 - a_1)^2 + (b_3 - b_1)^2}, \quad c = \sqrt{(a_1 - a_2)^2 + (b_1 - b_2)^2}.
    Solution. In order for a,ba, b and cc to be sides of a triangle, it is necessary that the inequalities a+b>c,b+c>a,a+c>ba + b > c, b + c > a, a + c > b be satisfied, each of which is equivalent to the Bunyakovsky-Cauchy inequality. Indeed, the correspondence a+b⩾ca + b \geqslant c is equivalent to the inequality 2ab⩾c2−a2−b22ab \geqslant c^2 - a^2 - b^2 or 2(a2−a3)2+(b2−b3)2⋅(a3−a1)2+(b3−b1)2⩾(a1−a2)2+(b1−b2)2−(a2−a3)2−(b2−b3)2−(a3−a1)2−(b3−b1)2=2[(a3−a1)(a2−a3)+(b3−b1)(b2−b3)]2 \sqrt{(a_2 - a_3)^2 + (b_2 - b_3)^2} \cdot \sqrt{(a_3 - a_1)^2 + (b_3 - b_1)^2} \geqslant (a_1 - a_2)^2 + (b_1 - b_2)^2 - (a_2 - a_3)^2 - (b_2 - b_3)^2 - (a_3 - a_1)^2 - (b_3 - b_1)^2 = 2 \left[ (a_3 - a_1) (a_2 - a_3) + (b_3 - b_1) (b_2 - b_3) \right], reducing by 2 we obtain inequality (*). Equality is achieved only if the numbers a3−a1,b3−b1a_3 - a_1, b_3 - b_1 are proportional to the numbers a2−a3,b2−b3a_2 - a_3, b_2 - b_3; check that in this case the vertices of the triangle must lie on the same straight line.
    It can be proved in a similar way that a+c⩾b,b+c⩾aa + c \geqslant b, b + c \geqslant a. This means that a triangle with sides a,b,ca, b, c exists, although it can degenerate into a segment. You can construct this triangle geometrically - in the Cartesian coordinate system, its vertices must be placed at points with coordinates (a1,b1),(a2,b2),(a3,b3)(a_1, b_1), (a_2, b_2), (a_3, b_3).
