ISAAC NEWTON
This year marks the 245th anniversary of the death of the great English physicist and mathematician Isaac Newton. He was born the same year that Galileo died. Already at school, Newton discovered extraordinary abilities for mathematics. At the age of 19, he entered Cambridge University and, while still a student, proved a theorem that was later called “Newton’s biome theory.” By the age of 24, Newton had laid the foundations for his future great discoveries: differential and integral calculus, universal gravitation, the theory of light and color.
At the age of 26, Newton became head of the physics and mathematics department at the University of Cambridge. In 1672 he was elected a member of the Royal Society (English Academy of Sciences), of which he became president in 1703.
The first stamp with Newton’s portrait was issued in France in 1957. Then stamps with his portraits were issued in a number of other countries. In the photo you see a stamp from the Polish National Resources Committee, two Yemen stamps and a Paragay stamp dedicated to Newton. On one of the Yemen stamps, next to a portrait of Newton, a reflecting telexcope he built is depicted. It is interesting to note that on this stamp the date of Newton’s birth (1643) does not coincide with the similar date indicated on the other stamps (1642). The fact is that Newton was born on December 25, 1642 according to the so-called old style. According to the new style we use, Newton’s birthday falls on January 4, 1643.
It should be noted that in England, Newton’s homeland, to date, no stamps dedicated to the great scientist have been issued.
